Default Is this a RAM, MOBO, or CPU issue?

Hello,

I have a Gigabyte UD5, an Intel Core i7 920, and 12 GB (6x2GB) of Kingston HyperX triple channel DDR3 2000Mhz RAM. Unfortunately, after some time, windows started displaying only 8GB and recently has started displaying only 6GB. I checked BIOS to confirm these numbers and they match. As I understand it, it could be a problem with my RAM itself, the motherboard, or even the cpu (as my understanding of the Core i7 is that it reads memory directly). Is there any way of determining which component(s) are at fault without any replacements on hand?

Thank you.

I've never had great experiences with Kingston HyperX ram. I wouldn't doubt some sticks failed. Run memtest and see what you get.

but would memtest be able to determine the diffrence between a bad memory module and a bad motherboard dimm slot? or a bad read from the cpu for that matter? I'll try it anyway though. Thanks

It appears memtest is only capable of testing ~4GB of my ram. I'll let you know the results but I doubt it will say much seeing as it cant get a read on all 12gb. Any other ideas?

Test 4 at a time. That would at least rule out the RAM. After that, test a single RAM module, you know works for sure, in each DIMM slot to test them.

memtest ~1000% coverage, 0 errors. That said its only tested the 4.5gb or so that was available out of the 6gb it could read.

As for testing a good module in each slot - I've thought of that and will indeed to so. Thanks for the good suggestion.

Do note that at first the system refused to run at the XMP profile settings and I had to knock it down to about 1000Mhz to past the POST. I eventually got it working up to speed but then it again refused to post and it appeared as if i had a bad module or slot. I continued trouble shooting and in the process somehow managed to get all 6 modules running up to speed by messing with the physical location of each module. After some time the system started showing only 8gb of ram, and then only 6. It didnt have any random crashes or DSODs until today. I must say I am very confused.

Perhaps the memory slots on the board have stopped working? Test each slot with 1 stick, and if it doesn't POST, you have a dead memory slot.

Tested each stick in each slot - looks like 2 dead sticks - pulled them out and its running at 8gb just fine. Processing an RMA with kingston at the moment. Thanks
