Default Needs help building a system based on e8600

I'm building a system for the first time and have my eyes set on an Intel E8600. I'm trying to figure out what is the best motherboard that will give me great speed and also has support for ATI Crossfire so down the line someday i can put in two 5870 cards.

I've come across a few so far on newegg but the specification of a Wolfdale chipset with crossfire doesn't turn up many results...

Any and all comments are greatly appreciated

You probably want to go with a x38 or x48 mobo. What is your price range?

If you're going to buy a processor that expensive, are you sure that you don't want an LGA 1366 i7? Same price, faster, and DDR3 memory to name a few. Also, Crossfire is open source, so any motherboard with two PCIe 2.0 x16 lanes will work wonderfully. Most motherboards don't advertise Crossfire support, because it goes without saying. SLI motherboards, however, have to be certified with the correct chipset.

The Gigabyte EP45-UD3P will do wonders to that CPU. However, the P45 chipset can only handle crossfire at 8x/8x bandwidth. IMO, with cards like the HD5870, a 16x/16x bandwidth will provide more performance in crossfire. A X38 or X48 board will be your best bet. Maybe an Asus P5E flashed with a Rampage BIOS?

That is not entirely true, Nvidia mobo's wont support Crossfire even though they have two PCIe 2.0 x16.

That is exactly what I had for my E8400 xfire set up, the Rampage BIOS is great for overclocking. Worked great. Had my Cpu @ 3.8ghz.

Exactly right, had it stable @ 4.0ghz but temps were pretty hot so I dialed it back down.

My price range for the motherboard is flexible, i'd go up to 400 if i need to...but i don't think that mobos are going to be that expensive in my price range. I'm trying to build a computer that is going to be good to play future games and still do well in crysis and other demanding games.

From the mobo that is recommended i can fill in the gaps with ram and hdd and other accessories, but i want my cpu, video card, and motherboard to be well suited for each other so i don't have problems when i fill in the gaps and start playing!

Edit: also i think once i get the system running smoothly i'll come back to these forums and start overlocking a little bit and get the hang of that :P
