Is there anything I can do short of an RMA for squealing capacitors on my Rampage II Extreme. The sound seems to be originating in the pci express region. The sound only occurs when the gpu is put under stress like gaming. I am also annoyed because I was under the impression that asus premium service involved a new replacement which was wrong. You get a refurbished board which personally I am skeptical about. Its also frustrating because some of the capacitors on the board actually came from the factory bent.

Mention it to ASUS, most of their products have a 2-3 year warranty...

Do you have your pci-e set to 100mhz in bios? Are you sure its not the VC? Is the VC overclocked? Can you place a different VC in the slot to test?

These guys covered the capacitors with clear nail polish and I have heard of guys using hot glue but Asus isn't gonna like it if you need to RMA in the future.

Apologies for the delayed response. The sound comes from a few things. First when playing any game or running a benchmark the squealing occurs. 2nd when I scroll down on a webpage it will do the same thing. This upsets me; I paid nearly 400 dollars for this damn thing! I think I’m going evga for my next build, qc seems to have gone out the door, bent capacitors is not acceptable for that high price, had I known the replacement would have been refurbished I would have just rma the damn thing back to newegg within the 30 days but that’s now long gone.
__________________I'm pretty much convinced it’s not the psu since the 3V, 5V, 12V look ok. I also had rma the psu and that did not change anything and I have tried different cards. The only conclusion I can imagine is that its coming from a capacitor on the board or the board is causing a squeal in the capacitor in the graphics card. Advice?

You think think that the capacitors being bent have something to do with the sound? I dunno 'bout that one.... ![]() What I'm thinkin' here is that you'd better get a clearer picture of the part that's making the sound...not that there's a fix but at least we can focus on one area. ![]() Get down there and move the video card around if you have to but at least get a focal point.

alot of video cards squeal actually and it is much more likely that it is the card than the mobo.
Take a vaccum cleaner hose and have someone move it while you are listening to the other end, where it is the loudest is the source. For me, I thought I had a bad video card but it turned out to be a failing PSU (Another possibility)

I've tested about 6 cards and I hear the same noise every time which leads me to believe that the capacitor(s) near the pci is doing it or the board is somehow causing it to happen through the card itself. Those are the only things I can think off. In terms of the replacement board, I wasn't told right until the end of the phone call that it would be refurbished so I was essentially lead on to think otherwise which would make sense for them so they can avoid the issue directly. Those are just my feelings. + I have heard some bad stories with replacement on newegg. The whole situation is quite frustrating. What I plan to do this week is to just take everything apart and space the components out on my desk, that way the fans in my case won't be drowning out the sounds to zero in on. Speaking of which, what was your impression of rma with asus?
