Default is spray painting my 780i a good idea?

i bet everybody is thinkin HELL NO!

i was just tihnking of spray painting the silver heat sink matt black...
oviously il remove it from the main board first, im thinkin only 1 part of that heat sink needs air on it and thats the main heat sink on the north bridge, and i could just cover that bit up and spray the rest.

just wondering if theres any serious risk like if the paints conductive or stops the earth conection, or even can mess up the temps?

im already getting like 60-80 degrees on that north bridge so im guna use some arctic silver 5 on those chips anyway.

and body think a thin coat of matt black can insulate the metal from the heat that comes off the graphic cards?

the paint could cause temps to raise,

think if as painting a window black, can you still see through it after its been painted.

A few things to say:

1.) No, that should be fine. And by fine I mean temps are going to rise slightly, but nothing major, unless you paint the base of your heatsink.

2.) I wouldn't use AS5 on the NB, it's slightly capacitive and can bridge electrical connections, causing problems. Use OCZ Freeze or MX-2 instead to take any risk out of the equation.

3.) Have fun.

Should be fine as the paint layer is thin.

ah i ran out of mx-2 i only got a tiny tube of it with a heat sink, what about that zalman stuff that comes with a little brush? i got some of that left.

also as paint can isulate the metal from tempatures, do u think it would pretect it from heat coming off the graphic cards, or small amount of heat rising from the cpu and ram? (my mobo is in upside down)

In my opinion painting a component on your board a different color is safe provided it is removed beforehand, although don't expect any effect in relation to lessening heat or insulating heat from another component. Using a different compound on your NB wouldn't substantially lessen your temperatures. To achieve a worthwhile reduction in temperatures you would have to use a chipset heat-sink such as a Noctua U6 or Xigmatek Porter, and/or a 40mm fan on top blowing cold air over the area, that would be much more effective.
