I'm helping one of my friends out with his pc but i cant figure out why the setup cannot identify his hard drive. The motherboard is gigabyte GA-8I945PM-RH and he has a maxtor 160gb sata hdd.

If you go into BIOS, can you see the hard drive?

if he has only 1 sata hard drive, you might have to tell the bios that you are not making a raid, and to let the sata drives act as IDE drives.

You want it set to AHCI then. Is that the one that is checked?

I would try ahci mode then. Cause if you have it setup for raid and there are no raids, chances are that the os setup will not see the disk.

Well, rather than figuring out what to change back, just set the bios to defaults and restart and see if the OS picks up the HD.
