U'll get a big rep
ID your clock generator (use google to find out how...it's not that hard, just have to know where to look on the mobo), and see if it matches any that are used by either clockgen's or setfsb's supported boards. Possibly the D865PERL uses the same clock generator?...so the clockgen version for that board would probably be the best place to start.

Smile Modify-Upgrade Compaq ????????????????????????????

I upgraded"read replaced almost every thing" on my dads compaq and there is so much propriaty BS on it that if i was to do it again it would have been better just to start with a new rig.....But dad wanted his compaq so I ended replacing a lot of stuff like remote usb plugs, floppy power supply plugs, power button ,hd led wires etc. compaq power supply gave me 11.2 volts with amd2400xp at stock settings-these are good machines to hide away in a old office or something somwhere..maybe to run a video survalence system in a hidden room ..we RMA'd our compaq via sears 3 times before taking the hot knife to her......#1 p2 366 , #2 amdK6 450 , #3 amd duron 700.....all junk-but there warrany / replacement program made it O-K.

Would like to keep cost reasonable (not cheap). I also want to Know if Rambus Ram is restricting to what my choices are.

YOU CAN NOT OVERCLOCK HP/COMPAQ/DELL PERIOD.

Other people might say you can get a hacked bios or use some application, well these methods will:

- Void your warranty

- Make you spend hours trying to figure out what to do, mostly resulting in your computer crashing and in some cases not starting up until you take the battery out of your motherboard and put it back in.

- Melt your whole system. All these computers are made horribly in every way imaginable take dell for example, the dimension 4700 has one single fan that goes to the CPU trough a long green plastic container, its 60mm and it's RPM is slower then windows vista's boot time!

There is almost no ventilation in the case and if you play a game your hard drive will reach 65 degrees Celsius in an instant. If you open your case your hard drive's temperature will always be at 50-60 without gaming or watching movies!

- Even if you manage to get rid of the temperature problem your little power supply and your crappy Intel motherboard is not going to get you far at all. In the end, IT IS NOT WORTH IT!

How do I know all this, well I am an owner of a DELL
Can't wait to build my own system sooner or later!

ive overclocked my intel d845pebt2 motherboard. the burn in mode gave me 4% but that wasnt enough, looking at clockgens site, i found out that my board used the same clockgen as some others, and downloaded the program..

1) how will the manufacturer no u used a program to overclock??
2) i used clockgen and now am running 2.6Ghz off a 2.2Ghz chip(wont go any further due to the fact mobo, doesnt have voltages/also possibly to cheap value ram)
3) i have no problems with heat. Hardisk is running at 20degrees celcius, cpu at 30 degrees celcius, and case temp hovering at 27 degrees celcius
4) i havent fried my computer
5) my power supply wouldnt be the problem(its the mobo)
6) when i play games, the cpu only goes up to 50 degrees celcius
7) took me 5 minutes

NO its NOT IMPOSSIBLE, just highly unlikely that u can overclock.

[EDIT] Note my computer isnt a hp/dell/compaq/any named brand, but Intel motherboards are overclockable, u just gotta open ur case, and have a look at the chips inside to identify, the pll chip.

Nice work, Lagger. The same principles do apply to pre-built systems, under the same conditions...but, as you've noted, it is rare that a pre-built or Intel mobo will use the same pll as one of the more popular and/or overclockable 3rd party boards.

Ok in total honesty having an A+ cert and teaching myself most everything practical about hardware (not like about the old nic cards with BNC connectors) if your going to overclock have an understanding enough to build your own pc at least (like know which side of the cpu to put thermal paste on so u dont fry a $200 CPU) even if you dont have the cash to make one KNOW HOW. This is due in part by knowing why your stock dell becomes insane hot and unstable if u overclock it (because of the thermal hood). And if you are building your own computer dont buy high end parts and assemble them without supervision or at least read the manual (I still do).
