I have a 40gb 5400 rpm, not sure of the cache. Might pick up a cooler so I can let'er fold.

If it's an old drive or one that came with the laptop chances are it' only has 2MB of cache. HDD are the biggest bottlenecks on PCs and even more so on laptops. You may want to change the HDD if you plan on working with big files, but since you specified that it won't be for heavy duty stuff your current one will do.

Just got this hard drive last week...Fujitsu. I'll boot everest and see what the cache is...

If buffer means cache in Everest, than its 8mb

The graphics won't switch I'm pretty sure. Your buddy probably juts got a different integrated chip. that's how laptops work...they just solder a chip onto the mobo and tada, a GPU.
