I could use some help is it possible to install a new os on a old compaq computer without an OS the CD-rom isn't working on it and it has WIN ME it has never been formated and lately my friend got DSL but hasn't afforeded a new computer so he asked me if I could install a new OS (Win 2k) for him and format it at the same time It does have the requeriments for the new OS but I have no idea how I would go about installing it without a working cd-rom....

I have a IDE--> usb adapter so I could use my DVD-burner to install it but I doubt it supports booting from usb.... ALL ideas would really be welcome I'll post of the compaq when I get home later today!!

Have only ever saw windows 3.1 be installed VIA 3.5 floppy disks. You could always client/server and use a image of windows to install it without the CD.

cant you just dowwnload a linux distro for him and burn it? the ide usb adapter should let you boot. on my board if you hit escape you can choose what to boot from cd/hd/removable etc. if the bios supports usb mouse/keyboard i see no reason why it wont pick up the dvdrw via adapter.

or cant you just hook up your dvdrw to his ide and install his os then take it bk when you done?

I would just hook it up to the IDE but I can't take it apart cause it dosn't use normal screws

Okay so I got the new screwdriver and opened it but the cd-rom dosen't use normal ide cables ..... so I was thinking of getting a 2.5" --- > 3.5" hd adapter but how do you know if the hd is a 1" , 1.8" or 2.5" size?

So that I would install the new OS on my computer and then move it to the laptop that would probably work?

Don't know if it will work, but take out the hard drive and slap it in another lappy with a working cd reader. Install the OS, then switch it back to the old lappy... The problem may be it asking for the cd again when "refinding" the new components.....

I tried installing ubuntu on another computer and then use the hd in the laptop it starts loading and then I get some error and it won't load the desktop


any ideas?
