Default EHD Problem

Hey all-

i just bought Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache USB 2.0 External Hard Drive

i install all the software and drivers and whatever

so i go to plug it into my moms laptop *its a dell *
and the first time i plug it in, the computer doesnt register that the drive is connected. So i unplug it, and reboot the laptop. i plug it in a second time. no joy. i lean my ear close to the EHD (i hear this drive is very quiet) to see if i can hear the disk spinning, and its not. so i can assume that the drive itself is not POSTing. i restart the computer a third time, and plug in the drive a third time. Finally, it POSTs and registers on the system.

i begin to back up my "My Pictures" files when i recieve one of those "This image already exists in this location" error messages. i think to myself, "how can this be right? i never put anything on it until now." i click "yes, go ahead and replace whatever im not really sure is there" in hopes that it will just go on with business. it completes the copy, and it shows through WE that all my pictures got onto the drive fine.

As soon as i disconnect the drive from the laptop, I hear a really loud beep and then i BSOD........

i want to check and see if theres anything malicious or corrupted on that drive, but now im afraid to plug it in to my laptop or my desktop......

EEK!

i reboot my laptop and everything seems fine, i just wanna know what the $$$$ that drive did to screw everything up.....

any input/ideas?
