I am looking for the cheapest notebook that has a core 2 duo processor. I guess you could say what is the best bang for the buck.
Looking for something at or around $600.

No, get the Vostro 1500.
You might be able to get a Vostro 1000 or 1400. I'm using my 1500 right now, and I love it.

Some people have problems with dells because they expect them to be Toughbooks. Others have never used a dell and bash it straight up like they do with macs.
The business line is built very well and I highly recommend the Vostro line.

First Time Build

This is a copy of my post in another topic a few down from here, but I feel it relates to your situation.
__________________----- I just got a laptop from Dell for my sister for christmas. 1.5GHz c2d 512MB RAM (easily upgradeable) Vista Home Premium 80GB HD 15.4" screen Cant remember any other specs off the time of my head other then it is the custom red case (which works great seeing as it is a Christmas present). I got it from the Outlet section of Dells website under their return/refurbished/scratch'n'dent section. It was a refurbished model. I did have one small problem upon receiving the laptop which was a faulty LCD display. I connected the laptop to the internet and connected to dell online where they remotely took control of the computer and talked the issue out with me via instant messaging online. Whole process did take about an hour, but it was SO much better then trying to decipher a heavy accent over the phone while being on hold for 30 minutes. Dell had DHL dropp off a labled box for the laptop the next day. I called DHL and schedule a pickup the following day from my house. The laptop arrived at Dell in 2 days and Dell called my cellphone with an automated message confirming they had received the laptop and it was in for repair (much better then an email IMO). The next day I got another automated call telling me the laptop was repaired and on its way back to be through DHL with the shipping number. The following day I received it back and it seems to be working perfectly. So yes, the laptop had a slight issue upon delivery, but was easily fixed. Total time from calling dell to sending me a box, to getting the laptop back was 6 days. VERY quick and efficient service IMO. BTW. Price I paid for a laptop with a c2d processor (not a celly)? 540 shipped to my door in 4 days. ----- I personally am pretty impressed with Dell ATM from that whole situation. They handled it extremely quickly and I'm glad to know that if anything else goes wrong with the comp that it shouldn't be gone for 2 months out for being fixed. I also feel I got an exceptional price on it and you really can't tell the laptop is refurbished at all, it is in perfect condition with not one scratch. The LCD issue was just a coincidence and could have happened on a new laptop as well, but it was fixed very quickly. One thing I will suggest is that if you do use dells outlet to search for a notebook....refresh the search every 1-2 minutes. The notebooks fly in and out of there because they are so cheap. If you see one you like, do not hesitate on it, grab it, or it will be gone in 30 secs or so. Also if you aren't looking for a colored one like I got, they you can get it almost 50 bucks cheaper. It came to 489+ shipping. ----- I just took a glance now at dells outlet and there are TONS. Most have the AMD X2 processors, but if you keep searching a few c2ds will eventually pop up. Cheapest I see ATM on there for one with a c2d processor (the 1.5Ghz model) is 579.99. There are 3 available all with 15.4" screens. The best one has a 120 GB hard drive and 2 gigs of RAM. Not too bad of a system that comes with 2 GB of RAM.

Turing Test is Overrated

My dad's 1500 arrives in week. After looking at dozens of Black Friday sales and laptops, the Vostro was our choice. I was impressed that it came with a video card...
