Default Laptop Guru needed.

Just bought one of these http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16834220255
for myself and one of these
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16834220202
for my wife. they should arrive Friday.

I have two question about mine. it comes with 3 gigs of ram I assuming this is broken up 1, 2gig chip and 1, 1gig "Intel Turbo Memory" chip...would it be better to remove the "Intel Turbo Memory" and replace it with another 2 gig chip?

also what are the reviews saying about the 8600m gt? is this something I should swap?

This is not meant to replace/compete with my desktop just something to mess with as I have never had a laptop before?

I don't think you can swap the intel turbo memory between laptops unless both support it. And the 8600m would be on the motherboard i think so you cant remove it, the normal ram you could remove and upgrade or whatever you needed tho.

the Asus laptop that you bought for yourself doesnt really need much added.

You may want to pick up a matching ram kit, to make it an even number, Look at this one.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231135

Im not really sure why they only put 3 gigs of ram in that computer... But it will run smoother if you have two sticks of ram that are exactly the same.

The video card in that asus, can be replaced. It is a PCI-E MXMII video card. So if you need to replace it, or just want a different one, there is the info you need about getting the right one to replace it...

I have so many PC's around my house that are running vista or dual booting XP/vista and I have access to tons of G5 macpros at work. I don't have experience with Linux do you think if I turned this in to a Linux laptop I would have a driver nightmare ?

Those are good laptops.

And the "intel turbo memory" isnt a RAM stick itself but the name given to reserved system memory.. pretty much a trendy name for shared memory.

The first one has 3GB because its the max 32bit OSs can support for the most part. If you get a hold of 64bit Vista you can buy a second pair of 1GB sticks to have 4GB. Better IMO than having 2+1GB.

Laptops are really no different than desktops.. but the major difference is that most laptop series have proprietary hardware so you might have trouble finding a modem driver or something. As long as you research and download all the drivers before hand, you should be good. If you cant find every driver however, you'll have to risk it if you want to take the jump.

Good luck

first thing I will do if I stay with a M$ OS is to format and install Vista 64 business/xp pro 64 in dual boot.
So dose that mean that intel turbo memory is taking up a ram slot or not? what I would really like is (2) 2 gig chips of HIGH speed ram.
thanks
