Hmmm...what to put here??

Does anyone know of a laptop in this price that has a 17" screen, decent graphics card and decent processor? I was thinking about the gateway P-6831FX but it's being discontinued which leaves me to believe that it's being replaced. Besides the processor is pretty weak.

I really like the HP laptops. If you're ok with a refurb unit, you can find great prices on www.ecost.com too. And check out www.techbargains.com. They highlight lots of good deals there too.
Dells are good too. Either way, you'll be happy. For $1000 you should be able to get a pretty good setup with either brand. You should be able to find something with a dual core AMD 1.9 - 2.2ghz, 2gb ram, and ~100gb hard drive for that price range. If you want an Intel processor, you'll probably get something like a 1.5 - 1.6 ghz dual core for that price.

Despite the processor being relatively weak its a great laptop. So far its run everything i've thrown at it. I can play Crysis on all high at 1280x800 with decent fps.
Right now they are gonna replace the P-6831FX with the P-6860FX I believe, the main difference is a slightly stronger processor and i think a 320gb hard drive. There may be more differences but there are alot of rumors floating about. Idk when this new model is coming out though.

I found this one locally for $1199...is this decent? I don't know much about the 8700m GT graphics card.
http://yahoo-ssp-cnet.com.com/notebo...39184135772#p5 a review of a similar one: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3856 The graphics card looks about 20% better than a single 8600m gt and gets 4-5k 3dmark 06 marks.

I'd stay away with Toshibas...I was issued one for work a few years back and it broke on me. Then the replacement Toshiba broke on me not long afterward. I got a 3rd one that was ok, but nothing nearly as good as the HPs and Dells I've used.

If you want to do gaming I cant recommend anything other than the P-6831FX considering the price. The only thing the Toshiba has over the FX is the speakers imo. Theres no sense in spending $1199 for the X205 when for another $50 or so you can get the FX with a faster GPU and more ram etc. .

For ~$1000.
If you want to game the P-6831FX is your best bet HANDS DOWN. If you dont want to game I would get a Dell Vostro due to its great build quality and the fact that you can get a nice one for cheap with the online coupons. Note that the 8600M GT's that come with the Vostro are running on GDDR2 memory which have much lower memory clocks and therefore have lower performance than the much better GDDR3 versions. Also the Lenovo Laptops are really good as well in terms of build quality and reliability, even better than the Dells I heard. (I personally believe they are better than the dells) Don't expect to do much gaming on the Lenovos either, as they are usually equipped with the intel X3100 or the low-mid end Nvidia quadro chips.
