Default Dead laptop, test card showing FF

You guys may remember the two laptops I had that displayed only a black screen when a DVD drive was inserted.
Anyway, for those of you that don't
1) Got laptop with faulty DVD drive which also wouldn't boot 5 times out of 10
2) Put DVD drive in cheap laptop to check it wasn't the mobo on the other one
3) The other one wouldn't even get to the BIOS screen - HDD acess light and fan would come on, but dead as a doornail otherwise.
4) Other laptop started doing the same thing. It doesn't matter if you boot without a DVD drive, it still does it, as does the other one.
I tried stripping it down and putting it back together. Tried replacing the CPU. No luck, although flashing gray screen sometimes appears.
Tried using test card. Comes up with FF code. No idea what the problem is, and I have tried everything.
Any ideas?
Thanks for looking
