Default Acer laptop problem.

My friends Acer Aspire 3000 is having some problems. He called me and told me he got a popup for some sort of file problem. So I stopped by and grabbed his laptop and brought it home. When I power it up I can go into the BIOS and everthing looks ok,shows the HDD and everything. But it wont boot to windows, tried using Drive Fitness Test but could not get it to load from a ISO on a CD.I even tried putting in my Windows XP disk and it said hit any key to boot from CD but nothing happens after I hit a key.Any Idea's?

Got some more info from him.He was using it and it shutdown on him will on the internet. When he restarted it he got a blue screen with the usual gibberish saying windows had a serious problem. He restarted again and nothing would happen so he shut it down for a half hour and then restarted. He then got a black screen saying their was a missing or corrupt file.

Update Burned a UBCD disk and still wont load DFT to test the Toshiba HDD.Running Memtest 86+ now

wait... was the error "NTLDR is missing?"

If so:

Try the XP disk again, and instead of booting, try repair. (press "R")

fixmbr should correct any Boot Record problems...

Well my XP disk took about 10 minutes to finally see the HDD but it didn't find the existing Windows XP OS.So I can't do a repair install.I'm hoping that I can put the HDD in a enclosure and see his files.
