I'm looking for a laptop (preferably below £1000 / $1500) which will be capable of running games such as Empire: Total War smoothly on decent graphics settings.
There are a couple of potentials which have caught my eye: HP DV7-1055EM and DELL STUDIO 1735 I know a laptop isn't as good as a desktop I could get at that price for gaming, but I need the convenience and advantages of a laptop, and would also like it to run games effectively. Could anyone offer any advice/suggestions as to whether these laptops are suitable for gaming, and are there any other laptop suggestions? Many thanks

This is the debate I am going through with myself.
I know the Asus G50v has a 9800GT and runs games better than both my GTS 640's in SLi . And it's relatively cheap. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...Tpk=asus%20g50 My buddy got one at Best Buy for $1,000, so you might be able to get it cheaper (I know you live over sea's, but it's the best I could do )

The HP will be able to play most games. The Dell, I'm not so sure.
Just look for a laptop with a decent GPU that's pretty cheap. Bonz's recommendation sounds good. ![]() Except it's a bit expensive.

Out of the two choices OP linked I say the HP no doubt. It has the newer platform so not only is the CPU a couple of ticks faster but actual memory bandwidth should be over 1000MB/s more. The 9600m GT is better than the 3650 and that 3650 is not very good for a 3650 in the first place, 256MB? Not enough I have the 1GB version and on the 3DMark06 I have seen I get about 1000 better score stock 2000 when I OC.
__________________I do think taking a look at Asus is a good idea they build a lot of bang for the buck as pointed out before. Also if you like small like I do they have 14's that are more powerful than the HP same CPU but 9650m GT.

The Dell Studio 15 (smaller version of 17) can be customized with some of the best options for the money I've seen. I'm probably going to get one of those, but your next best bet aside from Dell is probably Sager. Well at least that's how it is for me, I don't know about the overseas prices. The performance depends a lot on how you configure them when you order.

GPU on DeLL Studio 15 is weak. Even weak in class, heck the 17 is weak. But I do understand for some not an issue. Clearly done by DeLL to prevent overlap w/XPS. They got rid of Vostro 1500 for the same reason.

What most of my friends and I do (and I'm sure a lot of people here on OCN) is we have a decent desktop and a pretty cheap and small notebook. We play games on our desktops, but if we ever need to move around we have our small notebooks (guess you could say they're netbooks) as well.

Many thanks for the help & suggestions. I'll probably go for the HP, it's the best I've seen so far, but I'll keep my eyes open.
