Default Macbook HDD Help

Okay, my girlfriends macbook (1.83ghz) has some photos that she needs to get off for her family, and it seems that her HDD is going dead/dead. When she boots up she gets the folder and question mark and it keeps coming up. We just want to get the photos off it, is there anyway to do this? i have her laptop next to me, any ideas??

Use the finder to search for the folder, it sounds like a Folder's Alias (shortcut) can't find the source.

no i cant, whenever i try and boot up, the screen showsthe folder with the question mark, i can't go into the system. Disk Utility doesn't recongize the HDD, its like it isn't there. Any way to get the files off of it? Maybe taking out the HDD and doing something with it??

Also, the System Profiler doesnt show anything with the HDD

If it is still under warranty, I'd take it into the apple store.

Just a side-note, you will need a torx screwdriver to remove the hard drive from it's mount. I forget which size though.
