I think that the new ATI Mobility HD4000 would be worth waiting for, they are already planned for some Asus gaming laptops.
By "Brand" do you mean a UK company or Brands that sell in the UK?
Also, what price point are we looking at, how much are you willing to pay?

*I would suggest the Alienware Area-51 M15x or M17x:

Good price/performance ratio with the M15x starting off at $1,300.
Crazy performance with the M17, Quad Core, ATI CrossFireX, but the price is crazy with full options.

*Also have a look at the Dell XPS M1730, very big build but good performance and feature, option for Nvidia SLI 8800M GTX.

If i were you i would wait for the new AMD/Nvidia Mobile Platforms, enjoy your Core i7 for now

I imagine for a gaming laptop, a quad would be overkill. Keep in mind that traditionally, quad's take up more power, and run hotter than a dual core at least for desktops. Add to the fact that outside of GTAIV, and FC2, there's almost zero games that benefit from a quad. Also, quad's in laptops are relatively new, and thus tend to attract a price premium.

The only real benefit would be if you wanted to be future-proofed (hard to do in a gaming laptop) or if you wish to do a lot of video-editing/encoding or photoshop on the side. My recommendation would be to seek a dual-core, however the laptop quads may be optimised for the task and I could be wrong (corrections appreciated)

Good luck!
