Just got this netbook, very pleased so far, though very busy removing all the bloated software on it.

Heya,

I have the EEEPC1000HE. It's a fantastic little machine. I bought a 2gig chunk of RAM to replace the 1gig it comes with since it was like $9 at NewEgg as well. It was easy to install, any novice could do it. The HDD is completely replaceable as well. This is very important because if you get the one with the 160g HDD, and later want an SSD, you can swap them out with no troubles.

Worth noting, if you get a netbook like this, get a way to add an optical device via USB. I got an IDE->USB adapter for $15 from newegg as well because I like to fool around with OS's on the machine. Cheaper than buying an external USB DVD just for this thing. Defeats the `cheap' of it.

In Linux, my battery life is around 6 hours, give or take.
In XP, my battery life is longer with Asus's Hybrid Engine on, closer to 9 hours.

Well worth it if you want something that lasts a long time and will do what any netbook is meant to do.

-----------------------------------------------------------

My one peev: I hate the gloss. I want to spray it with some Matte Finish. But I'm curious if anyone else has done this or even attempted something similar. I don't want to mess it up of course, but I'd love to matte finish the thing to remove the gloss completely off the lid of the machine. Not sure if it will melt off over time with the heat though. I would probably try to do the same to the hand rest as well (cover the keys and screen and mouse pad of course). Haven't done it yet, but I'm researching to see if anyone else has tried it and how it worked out.

Gloss is the devil!

Very best,

Very best,
Congrats. I know what you mean about the glossy finish. All the finger prints and having to clean them off gets old real fast. I haven't tried this myself but member r34p3rex on here put a decal on his 1000HE that helped with the finger print problem: link. By the way what RAM did you get? I've been waiting for a $10 2GB stick deal but haven't seen any yet?

The 945 does support 3d acceleration, just not too much acceleration. Far Cry is playable, and that can't be done without 3d acceleration. I have the same laptop and love it.
