Default black screen of death?

Hi, I think I may have got a virus on my laptop, and it seems like it gives me a black screen just before the login to windows. the black screen appears after the green loadbar for windows vista, and just before the login. I can see the cursor and move it around, but the screen just stays black. I don't know what to do :/
Can someone help me?

And also, if I wanted to retrieve some files from the hard drive before formatting, is that possible? and how.

Put in your vista install disk like your going to install. Let it boot from the disk and hit repair when the question comes up. If problem still continues, reinstall with full reformatting.

repair should fix it if its fixable, and you wont lose your data.

another thing you could try is getting a boot cd with antivirus on it if you do suspect its a virus.

By "boot cd" we mean that there are cd's available on the internet that will allow your computer to boot from the CD rather than the hard drive. These CDs can contain a multitude of tools such as antivirus and other diagnostic tools. A google search will net you quite a few different versions of these and you can easily burn them on a spare or a friends computer with a burner.
