You will need a controller for it, like this one: http://diyprojectorkits.com/store/in...&products_id=2

Did you ever plan to use the laptop as a laptop again? If no, will this be a permanent case mod?

Remote desktop is encrypted and relatively secure. Also, the connection will be local (assuming you have a router).
Are there any other types of cables I might be able to use if I can't just get an extension cable? Or would sheathing/wrapping the ribbon help at all?

I don't really plan on ever using the laptop as a laptop again. It's seen its days and got solid use out of it. I recently purchased a new laptop that is more portable and I actually use as a portable computer. I was anticipating this being permenant, or at least long enough where the laptop would be completely obsolete and I could justify buying something else if I decided I didn't want that setup anymore.

And yes, I have a router, just been too lazy to get it certified for the campus network by the IT department, so I'm on a direct line to the wall for my desktop at the moment. Laptops are using campus wireless, but I could just attach them to the router to remote in if necessary.

At that price tag it wouldn't be worth giving a new use to this laptop... I'd just buy another monitor as already suggested, but thanks for the link.

A ribbon cable is just a bunch of parallel cables. They're just relatively small and hard to make one of your own.

I would consider fabricating a custom case.... or purchasing a large project box. Mount your laptop's mobo + HD to the project box. Cut out the top of the box and mount the LCD.

Alrighty, I guess I'll just flip the screen and either get a new keyboard/mouse to use on it, or set up remote desktop.

Thanks Duckie.

So, belated update. I went to flip the screen around and the first issue (minor) was that the bezel jutted out a bit and the keyboard prevent me from closing the lid flush. Simple solution, detach the keyboard from the unit. It still boots up fine without one, strange enough.

Second issue I came across was from the hinges for the lid. They're cut asymmetrically, so when they're turned around they don't line up exactly. It's ok, I was still able to get them in enough to get the screws in.

The third issue I came across was attempting to reinstall that piece of plastic that sits just above the keyboard. Due to the new path for the monitor cable (and the increased height of the hinges), it doesn't want to go on. Again, no biggie, since I can power the machine on my just pressing the button on the motherboard, no need for the button like some other machines I've seen.

I'd post pics, but I don't know if enough people would be interested to make it worth it, hahah. Although if I decide to set it up as a fahmon monitoring computer, I'll take pics of it then.

Just a thought.... did your keyboard use to get warm? Make sure the system does not overheat as some laptops utilize the keyboard area as a heatsink. Since you're covering this area with the LCD now, it may increase temps.

The only location on the laptop that ever really got warm was the battery, which is more by the touchpad than the keyboard. The keyboard itself is a really flimsy piece of aluminum with the keys thrown on it. If it's capable of service as an effective heatsink, I'm just gonna duct tape it to my folding rig and say screw it with the idea of using his laptop
