I'm looking into putting a WSXGA+ (1680x1050) LCD panel into my HP DV6000 notebook which currently has a WXGA (1280x800) panel.
Would it work?

Yes, it is possible and it would work. The guides I used when I did it once, although when I did it, the two panels were identical (I don't see why it shouldn't work even if the panels are different):
