I have an old Compaq Presario 2100 from 2004. The original hard drive (40 GB) went out in 2006 was fixed under warranty by Best Buy. They replaced it with a 60 GB hard drive that has worked well since. The hard drive is now almost full, due to my SLR. I was looking at newegg for hard drives. I think my hard drive ATA, but I am not sure.
__________________My question is can a run an SATA 7200 rpm hard drive? Is SATA backwards compatible with ATA? Can I run a different cable that will work? Thanks for the help! Jonathan

NO, sata will not work, may I recommend an ext hard drive? They make ones that only use a single usb cable for power/data
