Default Friend Completed- My Turn :)

Hello OCN,

If some of you remember..I had a previous post about buying my friend a new laptop. He settled with the Studio XPS 13 and he really likes it..Some issues with it are..heating and battery life. If anyone here on OCN has the Studio XPS 13 and can give me some feedback that would be great. If not, I am looking for a laptop that is 13", light, partial gaming, looks pretty, backlit keyboard, good battery life, performs well..I am leaning with the XPS because it covers most features. And I thought I would include that the budget is $1600-1800 AFTER TAX (Canadian $).
Thanks,
Wasbo

Right now he XPS Studio 13 looks good to me at it's components and price. 13 are always going to run hotter than larger. Unless you describe physical burns or very high reported temps I can't comment. The statement it runs hot is too vague.

Good luck.

Yea, I thought the Studio XPS 13 was probably a good choice as well. I also heard that Dell has a bios update that is supposed to fix some of the heating issues.

Since you helped your friend. Have him install HWMonitor/free and report temp so we can determine is heat really an issue and if so how much?

I was super close to buying the xps but what killed it for me was the fact that is gets 2-3hrs battery life on a good day which is pathetic in a 13", and the hear output is RIGHT into the screen on the left side. Overall it is a good machine as long as it lasts. There are other machines I would say are good too in that size, but none good enough for any decent gaming. a macbook is a great choice and they are built quite a bit better, and get 5 hrs battery life in osx. If a lot of the games you play work in osx, I would say go that route for sure, the 9400m in the macbook is pretty darn strong.

Only 2 or 3 hours on the XPS 13? That is really disappointing. I have been checking out this laptop for a long time and planned on getting one in the future. But, if it has such poor battery life I will be looking elsewhere. I need at least 4-5 hours, preferably much more.

My next candidate would be the Dell 14z.

I did some more research and i dont think heating is that bad..but the problem is battery..my buddy bought a 9cell battery which gives him good battery life but is a little costy and adds some elevation

I am very surprised t hear that the battery life is so short. An upgrade would help if your friend can afford a different battery.
