Hey guys, I have been out of the laptop game for a while. Actually, I wasn't really into it,lol. I just pulled the trigger on this laptop http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834115681
Would I be able to overclock anything safely? Video card, RAM, or CPU? I know that overclocking laptops builds more heat and what not, but can it be done and still stay within safe limits?

I'm pretty sure it's just like any OEM desktop and all the overclock settings in BIOS is already disabled. You may be able to overclock the card with a software program but I think that would be about the extent of it.

Well, you know it really comes down to the same things that it would on a desktop. Is there good cooling? what kind of voltages will you run it at?

Nice laptop you've chosen there.
__________________As for overclocking, I've been trying to overclock my laptop using setFSB but I don't know which clock generator to use, it either has no effect or it freezes my entire PC. BIOS overclocking is impossible on laptops, afaik. As they have incredibly simple BIOS systems, allowing you to change only the boot drive order and the time. This is the case for me, anyway. This could be a completely biased post as I've only tried it with my laptop but I wouldn't buy a laptop just to overclock as it may be impossible/pointless. Good luck however

Thanks for the fast replies guys. I know the bios is probably locked, what I was thinking about was software overclocking. I know, I know, not the best idea. That's why I was asking you guys.

I tried overclocking my brother's acer a few months ago (got it from newegg as well) but the bios disable it and besides, these laptop get very hot from my experinces; i would think its pointless because your heating it more than getting better performnce.
I dont know if this is true, but overclock laptops can use more battery, right?

As for your laptop OP, you can probably use NVidia System Tools to overclock your GPU and possibly your CPU. If it doesn't work for your CPU, you will have to use something like SetFSB. You don't have to worry about voltages, since you can't change them so you will only be able to overclock on stock volts. Just be sure to get it semi-stable at whatever frequency you try, and don't get the temps get over 90. Also, you might want to invest in a notebook cooler such as the NZXT Cryo LX. It is a great cooler - probably one of the best available if I'm not mistaken.

setfsb is your best option Clockgen is the other. Just find the correct PLL. Of course you don't know what it is. I can find by trial and error in about 2 minutes. Just try one and have it show clocks. If they display correct or partially correct you likely have the correct "family". Then go further until all clocks display correct. Then set small OC see if it sticks.
On this entire BIOS vs Software OC? In the end they do the same thing so no difference so one is not better than the other. Contrary to OCN popular opinion. The real advantage of BIOS OC is the increased parameters nothing more. Heat is an issue with all OC's, desktop or mobile. The difference is mobile has limited options to control. Not some mystic difference some like to delude themselves into thinking. Not conjuring up the demons of the past or any other higher power. I don't know about OC'ing Nvidia I OC my ATI. Oh the CPU OC will OC your RAM. And your RAM will likely be the limiting factor in your OC. |

The main problem with OCing laptops is heat, especially if you have a dedicated video card. IMHO, it's not worth it as it will shorten the laptop's lifespan and you'll only get a minimal performance increase. However, replacing the crappy thermal paste with MX-3 will make the laptop run cooler, so I recommend doing that.
