Default Dell XPS M1530 Time-of-day clock stopped

My best friend just came by to drop of his laptop which started giving this error today, it will pass the Dell loading screen then immediately say this error and hang there, can't get to bios or windows. I immediately suspected the bios battery is dead but only after 1 year? 85% of the laptop's use is when it was plugged into the wall so the battery is hardly worn. Could it be anything else besides the bios battery and is it possible to open it and just change the thing myself?

you can open it and buy a battery, cant charge those little bugers though.

what error does it read.

doubt bios battery would be causing this.

even if battery was dead; you should still be able to get into bios and windows xp, however xp might b**** at you for the wrong time.

Turn it on and it passes the Dell start screen then says Time-of-day clock stopped and hangs there doing nothing.. can't even get to bios, by what google tells me its either the battery or the motherboard. My friend did say a few mins before it started giving the time-of-day clock stop error the bios time wouldn't stick and would keep going back to default.
