Default IBM Thinkpad T42 Screen replacement advice.

The LCD on my IBM T42 is cracked so I bought a new screen to replace it, not just the lcd panel, but the housing too, the whole top panel effectively.

I cannot seem to get the existing (broken) top panel off as I cannot locate the screws to get it out, and I can't see any guide on the internet that explains how to do it.

I have a feeling the whole laptop needs to be dismantled to allow the hinges to be pulled out, but looking closely it may just be the top case of the bottom panel that needs removing.

If anyone owns a Thinkpad or knows how to go about doing this, your help is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Will1458.

Oh oh oh! I know this! I used to work on those all the time at my old job!

Post a pic of the front view, the keyboard area plus lower of screen.

I'll shoop it up and show you what to do!

One of the best things about the Thinkpad is that all the info are available.
This is the link to the Maintenance Manual (pdf). All the instructions (and schematics) about the replacing of the parts are inside.

If necessary, this is the download page.

Usually there are these square or circle stickers on the lcd side of the lid. You have to pop those off to get to the screws. I just got a pin and pulled them off and broke them since I bought some replacement ones of eBay.

You need a high-quality electronics/jeweler's philips head screwdriver. The screws have nylon coating so you need a very good quality screwdriver or else you risk stripping the screws. If you have bad screwdrivers, removing the screws are a PITA.

I changed the screen on a friend's T61, which has the magnesium alloy rollcage on the LCD. I do not think the T42 has a roll cage on around the screen so replacing the LCD should be easier.

Thinkpads are great because there are always lots of parts and they provide a maintenance manual for each product.
