I really can't decide... I'd mainly be using it for quick internet browsing in school, word docs, that kinda thing, which makes me think Netbook. But then I find reviews saying that Netbooks can barely even handle word docs or YouTube, and then I think Laptop. Then I remember how cheap and portable Netbooks are... But then I remember how they don't even have optical drives @_@
So I'm looking for recommendations on either a real nice Netbook or a decent and inexpensive Laptop, and maybe some personal opinions on the subject... Por favor. Help me out OCN! Oh, and here's a twist; will Win7 Home Premium x64 run on a Netbook?

Go with the celeron line of netbooks if you want the in between option. It has the 4500HD which was able to do HD playback for me in my Dell Studio15. Most come with 2GBs of RAM and aren't much more expensive.
Plus these ones come with win7 64

I've got an Asus 1000HE. Love it. It can run WoW, not well, but enough to cruise the auction house. I use it mainly to take notes in class, I usually have a couple webpages open, a couple word docs, and instant messenger. I'm running Windows 7 on it. I highly recommend netbook for your use. I wouldn't want to carry a laptop around campus in my backpack. Too big and heavy. The optical drive really isn't an issue. I use my DVD ROM in my computer maybe once a month. In the day of USB drives, why would you need one?

AFAIK its gotta be x86 on a netbook. I'm not aware of any x64 processor options for these. My Eeepc 1000h handles word processing and youtube videos just fine. If you're gonna be carrying it around school all day 1kg has got to be better than 3-4kg of a normal notebook, and the 6-8 hours of battery life has got to be a plus. You could always get an external CD drive for less than $50 and just use that when you need too. How often do you actually think you'll be needing that feature while you're out and about with it?

For your case a netbook might be your best option. If you are just going to be surfing the web, and taking notes for class. At dual core laptop prolly isn't going to give you much more benefit than a atom processor would. If you wanna a laptop with a little more bang in the graphics try looking at the Asus N10 it looks like a nice lappy.

As for the CD drive, my friends always have their CD collection on them at all times... I know if I show up with a new computer they'll be hounding me to use it for their CD's... But honestly it's just me being nitpicky, I can always just tell them to shove it. So since Netbooks apparently win, what do you guys think is a good model? From what I've read, the Asus Eee PC seems to be king right now. Can't find one for sale anywhere... Though it has good specs, $600 for a Netbook is a bit steep anyway.

My vote is the Asus 1000 line. I forgot to mention, I get 8.5-9 hours battery life on my 1000HE.

Well the question is how patient are you and how important is the video playback? Because the Celeron M is going to beat the Atoms and the 4500 is going to beat the GMA500. And for the same price the only determining thing is the battery which I can't say anything about.

I just got this netbook:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834220654 It's amazing. It loads all my apps fairly quickly (Band-in-a-Box, itunes, Digsby, word docs). I really have no complaints. It's worth every single dollar. Only downside: Intel GMA graphics haha, but that's a small price to pay seeing as I'm not gaming on this thing.
