Default Laptop powers on, doesn't boot

Background story: I went to my parents' for the day and left my laptop on, when I came back the screen was all black, it didn't respond to any key presses so I just reset the machine. Didn't help; IDK if this is related, but it was a pretty hot day... I'd imagine the machine could protect itself from overheating, though.

Now the problem: When I power the laptop on, nothing comes up. The CPU fan blows at full speed like it always does when powered on, except now it slows down to idle speed a couple of seconds earlier than it used to. The screen remains absolutely black, even the backlight doesn't come on. The machine doesn't boot at all (as in it's not a display/graphics[-only] problem); the HD light doesn't blink and it doesn't make any of the acess noise.

What I've tried so far: removing both my memory sticks, the hard drive and even the wireless adapter (the internal; I pulled out the power wires), booting w/o the battery and battery only, left the computer unplugged overnight with the battery out (the actual battery, not the BIOS battery, don't know where it's located). Still nothing; it doesn't even give any beeps or other indication, even with the components and memory out.

EDIT: The laptop is Compaq Presario C700 with upgraded memory (extra 1GB to the stock 512MB) and an upgraded 320GB WD HD.

Try removing the wireless adapter completely. Those aren't power wires, those are the attena wires. It will remove/install just like a stick of laptop memory

If it doesn't POST with the hard drive removed I would say it is a dead mother board.

I would have to look it up, but my guess is that the CMOS battery is soldered into the motherboard and there isn't a way to reset it either.

Oh. Damned. DIdn't know that... well, it's a longshot but might as well try it, that thing along with the HD and RAM are the only components that I can get access to without pretty much disassembling the entire machine...

EDIT: One thing I should mention, it did this before (IIRC it was just like this, though the details might be a little off), except removing the battery and unplugging it and letting it sit for a couple of minutes fixed it.

Not much else you can remove even if you dismantle the machine. The GPU is likely integrated intot he motherboard. The only thing would be the CPU. If you haven't worked on a laptop before you are now presented with a good chance. I'd bet you could get a working motherboard off of eBay pretty cheap...$50 at the most anyway (just a guess, but should be around that).

Well, just tried with the wireless chip out as well. No dice.

Thanks for the help anyways, thread is still open to suggestions.

Sounds like a dead motherboard. I had the same problem not too long ago.

Bad MoBo is the obvious choice. I mean bad RAM or components at least give BSOD's. This gives nothing? So short of expert knowledge tools and skills not much you can do.

But to be honest most techs don't even test they just throw in a new MoBo and wait and see. Since you don't have one laying around go to a pro.

IDK if "going to a pro" would be worth it, I mean that was an AU$400 (yes, it was cheaper than the EeePCs were at the time I bought it) laptop and nearly 2 years old...

I'll probably just have to go shopping for a new laptop.

Compaq Presario C700, is that enough? There were some extra numbers too, apparently there are several different C700s, I can look it up.

EDIT: C731TU... it's Compaq Presario C700 C731TU

I honestly don't know if that last bit matters but doesn't hurt to throw that in there.
