I have a laptop which is 2 years old and it has been to Asus twice (because something went really wrong) and they changed all of the components with a new hard drive. I installed the recovery CD that I got when I bought my laptop and it installs fine. But when I turn it off and leave it for more than 5 minutes, it goes to "Please insert proper boot device" then "Error loading operating system" and finally "A Disk read error occured. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart." I found that if I restart it more than 10 times, it would eventually go to windows. I tried another brand new hard disk. Installed windows and left it for more than 5 minutes and the same thing happened.

First thing to check is bios, see if boot order is correct ( hdd first ).
There is also something to check is your optical drive as that may be failing. I had that same error ( disk read error ) and it turned out to be one of my 2 optical drives that was failing...and now it boots just fine.

Yes, you could try that however i don't think that will solve the problem at hand. People sometimes think that a disk read error means HDD but it could also mean optical drive. Try and see if you can install/update drivers for your optical drive from manufacture. You could also try a system restore.
