Hey
__________________EDIT: A friend of mine just got a new Sony Vaio laptop and a wireless Netgear router. Once I run the wireless network wizard thingy from the disk it asks for the admin pass which is detailed on the back of the router as "password" but it still doesnt work or connect and asks for the wep key which the supplier says you need to access the router to get. Any Ideas?

Sounds like there are configurations already in the laptop or the router. What you want to do is reset the router (there should be a reset button on the back, verify with the instructions that came with the router). Then run the configuration again for the router through the windows wireless setup, or the software that came with the router.
You might need to go into the settings of the wireless inside the laptop and reset that to default settings and try. That SHOULD get you in the right direction to configure the card. I've done the same thing with Linksys equipment.

Next you will run your install software for the router usually with the router CONNECTED with a Cat5e cable to the router and modem. After your setup be sure to click your network connections, right click the wireless network go to advanced and shut off your firewall. I would also suggest that you turn off your encryption key (wep) during set up. After you get things up and running you can enable your firewall and encryption security. After you try this please post back and I'll try to walk you through any setup problems that you have.

If it's still asking for a password after you have it hardwired to the router, then there is something else wrong. Did you hold the reset button long enough? There should be somewhere in the documentation stating how long to hold the button, or the proper reset proceedure.
If the router will not reset, you might want to consider returning it to the store you bought it and replace it. Might have a bum router (but I highly doubt it).

I would reset it. There should be a small button on the back of the router, you will need to use a pin or something very small to get it. Once oyu push it, the lights will cycle through, if this happens you know that you have reset it.
The password should be in the instructions (if there is even a pw at all) given to you by the manufacturer. Try just pushing enter and seeing if there is not a pw set yet. Or enter admin, or other usual passwords and username defaults. Lastly if the password the manufacturer provided you with does not work, and all else has failed, you have to return it. It isn't you fualt that they messed up.

You need to have it connected to the uplink ethernet port with a hard wired cable, not wireless. If it is working, it might automatically have DHCP so what I find easier (and more effective) is to run IPCONFIG on your computer to see what your default gateway is (most common is 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Then you go to your browser and type that IP in and it should ask you for the login (which is most often admin/admin or admin/password). Then you can configure it from the web interface. This works MUCH MUCH better than any program. If you still can't login, get on the horn with Netgear and have them walk you through it. I would do that before taking it back to the store.

Sometimes the user name is a blank.
Other routers it's "admin" As far as passwords go, the 2 most common are "password" or "admin" Try them with and without each other. Once you are in, change the password. Sometimes I have to unplug a router when I push the reset button.
