A volt mod is an external modification done to the PCB to increase voltage on the card, it results in more heat, but more overclocking headroom because of the increased voltage. Typically it involves soldering multiple points together. There is no other way to get such overclocking headroom on a card, but you'll want some 3rd party cooling to keep it from overheating.

Basically because of the way that many cards measure core voltage (for the GPU) you can trick it into supplying more voltage.

For example that 8800GT could only do about 650mhz core stock.

Turns out that stock meant that the volts were at 1.1 ish. So with the volt mod I increased the volts to the GPU up to 1.25, and allowing me to overclock all the way to 800mhz core.

A few months ago. I used it for a boot drive for a while, but got fed up with having such little space ( I have a crapload of files on my boot drive all the time) so I took it out and haven't used it since.
