Question [FAQ] How to Install XFire using Wine

Installing Xfire using Wine 0.9.37

The Requirements
- Nearly any distribution of linux I am using Xubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn which is just a sub-distribution of Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn that uses the XFCE window system and is meant for using a little less resources and taking up less space. To get this distribution, head over to Xubuntu.org.

-
Wine 0.9.37
To start off, head over to WineHQ to download the latest release of Wine [Wine Is Not An Emulator] then follow Chipp's guide to installing it. The version of Wine used in this FAQ is obviously, 0.9.37 for Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04.

-
Latest release of Xfire
This one is an obvious requirement. Go on over to Xfire.com and download the latest version.

The How-To
Now once you have a distribution of linux installed, Wine 0.9.37 installed, and have downloaded the latest release of Xfire, we are ready to get to the fun stuff.

With Wine, you are able to execute Windows executables (no pun intended) and install Windows-based software. In this case, we are installing Xfire but some of this can be used generally for any software.

To make things very simple, go to your accounts main folder (in my case, '
\home\myname\'). Just drag, copy-paste, or download the Xfire installer to that location. This will make locating it for wine much easier.

Once you have Xfire in your accounts folder, open up your terminal. It should look something like this now:

Now the most popularly used command you are going to ever use for wine is.. '
wine'. In this case we are going to use 'wine' to run Xfire which is located in the '\home\myname\' directory. So the exact location of the xfire installer (do not take this literally) is then '\home\myname\xfire.exe\'. So the command to launch xfire.exe will then be:

wine “\home\myname\xfire.exe”

Be sure to include the quotes so that wine takes that command literally and also with the quotes, you can then use spaces in the filename. This shall now launch the Xfire installer.

Once all of this is done, you can now use Xfire! Wine is not yet perfected and so not all programs will work perfectly the first time trying to get it to run and not all programs do work. For example, although Xfire will work just fine, you cannot always see the people in your buddy list and you have to hold your mouse over each space to see who it is. This is only a minor flaw that, the odds are, will be fixed with the next release of Wine or even with some simple tinkering.

To simply launch Xfire, just locate where it was installed. In most cases, wine recreats the windows Program Files folder system in a folder name '.wine' which is hidden in your account folder. Just swap out my account name for yours and this shall work.

wine "\home\accountname\.wine\drive_c\Program Files\Xfire\Xfire.exe"

I hope this has helped out all those who are learning Wine and be sure to look for many more FAQ's to come! By the way, this is basically how you would install any application using wine.

Special Thanks to,
Chipp

I was able to simply download the installer, and install it, using Ubuntu 7.04 and wine 0.9.33. No problems, except of course the same sort of thing that you have with some of the text not showing up (see your screenshot).

You know, there is an xfire gaim plugin somewhere. I can login to my xfire account via gaim (now called Pidgin).
