Damn if any one thinking about getting linux they will just say HELL NO but you are totally wrong, when you first used windows did you know right out of the box how to burn a cd? maybe yes maybe not but everything takes time to learn and I consider myself a total n00b when it comes to linux but i managed to do what ever it is that i want to do in less than 5 minutes and that has to be something medium dificult. I know every body dont share the same thoughts about Linux but in my case im loving linux.

All just to change my monitor res... Not only that, but even when I'd gone though all that hassle, I still couldn't change my monitor res, because I'd managed to break the OS... The only way to fix it was either to reinstall it, or a have a degree in Linux...

I like the idea of a free OS to give some choice to Windows users, but the people who make and distribute the various incarnations of Linux will have to make it far more user friendly if they ever want their OS to represent a real alternative to Windows, imo.

Enjoy your Ubuntu experience while it lasts, you'll soon find that even the simplest Windows tasks are 45 minutes of hassle in Linux and then you can't install half the stuff you want to...

Linux might be OK for those who want to get their hands dirty with the code, but if you just want to be an OS user and not a part-time programmer, Linux really isn't for you, from my limited experience anyway .

Good for you. I'm pleased you love Linux. To be fair I've only tried the Ubuntu distro, but in my experience it wasn't that easy to use. I remember using Windows 3.1 all those years ago and yes, to be honest, it was pretty easy "out of the box". It was easy because it is laid out in a (more or less) logical manner, with a GUI that is built intuitively. Since 3.1, Windows (other than, perhaps, ME) has been getting better and better until we now have (released) XP, which for me at least, does everything I want it to, without ever having to dabble in the OS's code.

A lot of people criticise MS and their OS's and yes, I am among them in many respects. What I really want, when it comes to PC OSs is a true alternative (or two) to Windows. An OS that does everything good that XP does and then goes a little further to bring the consumer an even better product. I just haven't found that in Linux yet, or at least not in Ubuntu.

Of course, this is all my own opinion and it is based on my own experiences, so don't think I'm trying to dogmatically and universally condemn Linux here, or put other people off using it. It's just that, after hearing so many good things about Linux from Linux users, I had expected a Linux OS to be better than MS's OSs and in my experience it wasn't even as good. I mean, c'mon, honestly, having to trifle in code just to change monitor res, it's ridiculous, I've never had such a basic function of an OS so poorly supported in any MS OS...

Anyway, I have a new found respect for XP now. I hate the MS monopoly because of the many reasons it is not good for capitalist societies, but I wont be burning my XP install CD any time soon. Ubuntu has shown me that XP is actually a very good OS and that Linux developers really need to focus on getting the little things right and working 99.99% of the time, or they will never create a true alternative to Windows.

Try a Linux distro if you want, it's worth trying, just don't get rid of your Windows install to do it .

I tried a Suse 10.1 live CD and i got to say it was quite good, but, most thing don't work on Linux!
There is usually just a windows version, which is annoying!

When comparing Windows to Linux you have to remember, Linux is free.

If I'm going to pay 100 dollars or so for an OS it better damn well work and be compatible. (sadly that's not always true).
