When try to extract the portage snapshot I get an error saying:
tar xvjf /mnt/gentoo/portage-20-Jul-2006.tar.bz2 -C /mnt/gentoo/usr tar: /mnt/gentoo/portage-20-Jul-2006.tar.bz2: cannot open: No such file or directory tar: error is not recoverable: exiting now tar: child returned status 2 tar: error exit delayed from previous errors I downloaded the portage snapshot though

Most of the time, the problem is that you didn't mount or cd into your partition, check that then redownload it. It fixes the problem 99.99999999% of the time.
