Default mplayer problems

Ok, I installed mplayer to play WMP and QuickTime videos in Firefox (I'm running Fedora Core 5), but when even I try to play a video it says "buffering - x%" up to 99%, and then when I hit play it really quick flashes "playing (name of file)" then says "stopped" and doesnt do anything. How can I get it to work? Is there a better program I could use insted?
