If you want a fast linux system its not about choosing a distro. This is what you do.

Install a common distro (something with root (- ie: not ubuntu) and RPM support (Fedora\SuSE etc)), and install it using the Reiser Filing system. Then, once your installed with everything stock. Follow this guide:

http://fedoranews.org/cms/node/1311

But, instead of using make xconfig. Install gconfig and use that, It provides a nice interface. Now, go into Device Drivers and disable all the things you dont need. There's hints incase your not sure. Also, be sure to go to Processor Architecture type and configure that to match your system. That should provide a fast linux distro.

I must warn you:

Also with regards to kernel-2.6.17 (and to a lesser extent 2.6.16) you need to be very careful with the (new) device-mapper section. As I've discovered, disabling device-mapper renders most systems unbootable, even though this section is mostly labelled "EXPERIMENTAL"

I personally think Gentoo is fast.
What the-Jester said works to. You either can dissable/remove the things you no longer use or do a fresh install, and only install the base of the system then from there install just the packages your going to use.
Also look into other desktop environments like Xfce or fvwm or blackbox.
