Well, after my recent failure with ndiswrapper and SLED 10, I've decided to go with a fresh install. I was going to revert back to Ubuntu, but The_Jester has convinced me to try FC5. Either way, I'm fairly sure I'm going to have to use ndiswrapper with any of these distros as I have a broadcom wireless, so hopefully that will work. So before I commence, any last words? Suggestions?

Good luck!
I've had 3 people tell me that FC5 is the way to go. I'm thinking I'll have to try it as well. As long as I can find a DE that I like.

I say give FC%, SuSe 10.1 or Gentoo a try. I've liked all three.

I think it's just my laptop. I can't get anything to ever work. Now I have to somehow get FC5 to allow me to use a 1440 x 900 screen resolution, and then attempt to ndiswrapper my wireless.
I would love linux, but sometimes I hate it. But I hate windows more. Maybe I should burn that OSX DVD that I have.... ![]() You know, I just want my own OS...

Getting it to run at that resolution is easy peasy. Here's how to do it.
Open /etc/x11/xorg.conf in your favourite text editor and look for this: Code:
Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Videocard0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 16 Modes "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 24 Modes "1280x1024" EndSubSection EndSection cp /etc/x11/xorg.conf.backup /etc/x11/xorg.conf and start x.

I've tried to read the books, but they bore me. I find that the best way to learn is to dive right in. I did this when I used FC5 for 2 weeks. I tried everything I could think of. I installed Xgl, ATI drivers - you name it! and now I'm going even further by creating my own distro. I'm doing all this in FC5 because I feel the most comfortable with it.
If you want to dive in, then first find a distro your comfortable with. This may be slack, or debian - but spend a couple days or even a week, going through different distro's until you find the perfect one for you.
