Default Looking for a New Distro to play with

Hey guys,

I'm looking for something to entertain me for a while. It's not going to be my main Jestix development environment, its just gunna be something to play with. Now, I have included a list of what I've tried and my conclusions. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Ubuntu (Repulsed from it - See the Sig)
SuSE (SuSE wasn't for me - KDE based o_O)
Mandriva (Same reasons as Ubuntu)
Debian (Could NOT get Gnome or KDE to work)

I can't think of any more - but keep suggesting and I'll tell you if i've tried it.

NOTE: My upload\download limit is probably close to the edge (like 10\11gb left) so net installs are a good thing

Hmmm...sounds interesting, but could someone fill me in with the package management? Is everything compiled from source or is there actually a package management system?

you could try out gentoo is it more advanced then most linux distros. It's a text based setup but I think it provides the most user options. It also has portage which is a nice utility to download software. To install something you just type emerge program name. The ability to set the use variable is pretty nice too. You would have your choice of gnome or KDE whichever, or some other GUI. Check it outwww.gentoo.org

Gentoo is a good linux distro for more advanced users unlike me.

EDIT:There is a package managment suystem built in. When you update it will delete the files you are updating and then install the new ones.

I tried the BSD's once. I kicked my PC for 10 minutes because of them o_O

I think I'll take a closer look at Gentoo.

EDIT: Next on the agenda is what windows manager? Which ones support transparent terminals AND the GTK framework?

Get VMWare. It is awesome lol.

You can play with any distro you want while still in any distro you already have.

Download VMWare Player. Download an iso for any os. Follow this guide.

BTW I'm running Dapper and vmwaring to Debian Etch...I like etch. You can also google for vmware images...there should be one on netliving.com or something.

Yeah - I have vmware but I think it doesn't give you the real taste of it. I like to use a distro for a while, so I get to know it.
