So yesterday I got my new laptop; a small but nice Compaq V2000Z (nothing fancy but useful for what it's intended for). As soon as I got it I removed Windows and installed the latest build of Ubuntu (6.06.1). Everything works just fine except for the wireless chip. Unfortunately, this laptop has the dreaded Broadcom chip and I hear it can be a pain to set up. Ubuntu recognizes it (I think, since it shows up in the device manager with the bcm43xx driver). So I'm like
and proceed to install network manager which does not seem to work (it shows up in the taskbar but it gives me no options). Next I tried doing it manually via fwcutter and several firmwares with no luck. I tried looking at the Ubuntu forums but those things are a mess and people hardly respond (I have even had the pleasure of meeting some Linux snobs earlier ). I'm frustrated. Anyone have any ideas how to get wireless to work. Oh, I'm doing it with WPA support (wpa supplicant is already installed and functional).

Success!!!!!!!
After several attempts I got so cranky that I had to take a nap. Once I recovered I looked at some of the guides at the Ubuntu forums and got my wireless connection working. I'm writing this on my laptop using firefox. Even got my ATI drivers installed. Awesome ![]() ![]() .
