Can Ubuntu be installed on a seperate partition or booted from a USB external hard drive. I want to try out linux, but i am going with Knoppix first I think. Heres my hardware:
__________________DFI rs482 Infinity Opteron 165 Diamondmax 10 250gb sATA x800 gto 1gb ram media card reader dual DVD+- burner, CDrom onboard sound and ethernet HP 1350 all in one printer no other added peripherals Is there any hardware issues I need to know with this setup with either Ubuntu or knoppix? thanx in advance.

From the Ubuntu installer, I think you can create a partition for it in there.
__________________Linux uses a non-Windows fileformat, EX3 (I think it's that .. something like that). It can be booted from a USB hard drive as long as you set the Primary Boot up to do so.

Been a while since I've tried Linux but I recall it supports NTFS too!

yup duke it supports NTFS, i know madriva and Suse do.

NTFS can be read from just fine. Write support is a little scetchier.. FAT partitions work flawlessley. So does READING ntfs. To install, you should use a linux filesystem like ext3 or reiserFS. BTW- You DON'T have to defragment linux filesystems.
__________________Yes you CAN write to NTFS in some distros- it is still experimental tho, and I would stay FAR FAR away....

if you just wana try it use a live cd and boot from that. this way you can try everything linux has to offer and you dont have to install it
