I wouldn't call it trash, but it definitely wasn't great.
They really need to ditch (or speed up) Yast, because it too so long for me to try and install updates (almost half of which couldn't continue due to unsolved dependencies) that I just decided to give up on Suse altogether. RPM is so inefficient it makes me sick. In my opinion, now, there are only two real main-stream choices for efficient and reliable package management - dpkg/apt-get and portage (depending on what type of system you are going for). Just another reason why Ubuntu is so great. They do really need to clean up the KDE side of things though.

Yeah Yast is what made me stop using SuSe. I found the SMART package manager to be much better for it. Faster and all around did a better job. I didn't like apt-get and that at first but I'm beginning to like it.

Heres what my Ubuntu install looks like now. Going to mess with Slackware later and might post a picture of it too.

Nice Hobo!
I'm thinking of throwing Ubuntu on a small partition just to play around with apt-build, I'll be sure to dress it up a little bit.

Let us know how you like it (as far as package management, etc.)

Ubuntu 6.10 + Beryl (no xgl or aigxl, the new nvidia drivers directly support composite rendering). Vista eat you heart out!

Ubuntu 6.10 and FC6 both come with X11 7.1 which has aigxl part of it. Its standard part of X now from 7.1 and up. Quote:

By installing the nvidia driver it'll enable the dri and glx modules. So no need to install them yourself. You don't want xgl because aigxl is considered much better than xgl (just an extension to X11 rather than a whole new x server).
To take full advantage of aigxl you can add the following: Section "Extensions" Option "Composites" "Enable" EndSection Which sounds like you already did, but that step is not necessary to get this to work. This is all part of the Ubuntu way of thinking, just make things work, with little or no need of doing anything or knowing anything about how it works. Which is really quite nice IMO. I just now this about X11 because of the work I've done experimenting with it in FreeBSD upgrading from 6.9 in the ports to 7.0 and 7.1 and trying to get aigxl and Beryl to work on FreeBSD.

I haven't tried adding much to xorg.conf yet, but I will try your tip and see what happens. I am getting no less (or more) than 60fps with V-sync enabled (200+ without it), so I think that my performance is pretty good. On a side note, do you know anything about enabling hardware video-acceleration for vidia playback?
__________________Your point about Ubuntu's philosophy is so true. I am only a few months new to Linux, but I have found that Ubuntu (and their excellent community) has made the transition rather enjoyably (seriously), they have found a nice balance between "oh my god, I don't know the damn command" and "duhh, point click, repeat". Have you gotten Beryl or Compiz working on FreeBSD? Because if so, wouldn't that open up the door of magical eye-candy to Mac users. EDIT: I just saw you compiz howto, very nice, I dind't know about <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Shift>+<L/R> to switch and bring the current window. Handy.
