Xorg uses hotplugging by default now, do

#pacman -Syy xorg hal

then add hal to your daemons in

#nano /etc/rc.conf

put @hal in your daemons, DO NOT STARTX YET!!. Make sure you load hal by rebooting or starting it with

#/etc/rc.d/hal start

Then you should be able to get into the x environment with startx. You shouldn't have to really mess with your xorg config unless you want to add custom things. You should really get into the practice of editing your Hal hotplugging files instead, google "arch wiki hotplugging" to see how. If you need any help just pm me.

Somehow i knew this post was for me

I've since given up, plus i need access 03 on my work laptop which is what i was installing (unsuccessfully) on. Gonna put arch on my desktop full time when my Tb hard drive gets here.

Thanks for your help though, it's much appreciated, and i've bookmarked it.

That's just crazy enough to work!
or dual boot...

Or run openoffice's database program. But i really really really dislike it. Might be able to get used to it though.

I've had linux full time on my main pc since jan 2008, no dual boot. I've been using virtualbox to run a virtual windows xp for my quicken since then as well. It has been great. I just switched to Ubuntu Ult 2.3 about 2-3 months ago. It has lots of programs preloaded and looks awesome!

Yea that's what I do as well. There is really no point to dual booting aside from gaming. I can even run Win7 in Virtualbox under Arch x86 on my ASUS netbook (N270 Atom, 2GB RAM) comfortably (when WINE fails, which is pretty much all the time, LOL)
On my wife's rig I have Arch x86_64 with VB running Win7 and it's so snappy you wouldn't know you were in a VM.

Make sure to install the add-ons for seamless integration and graphics driver support. It's really impressive once it's set up, and setting everything upis amazingly easy.

I was planning on building a PC this summer, probably a quadcore (or hexacore if they're out by then) with ~12g of ram, etc... how well do you think gaming in a virtualbox of windows 7 would be? I will be installing arch using DWM for my WM.

pic of my rig for the hell of it
