im pretty sure that any os trying to compete against windows would allow you to change the screen resolution. i have never used linux but there are some gurus on here that should be able to confirm that you can change the resolution.

Bump #2.

You would use the xrandr command to see a list of valid screen modes, and you would press "ctrl-alt-minus" or "ctrl-alt-plus" to quickly scan through them.

You most certainly can change the screen resolution--you can rely on autodetection, or you can force a list of valid modes in your xorg.conf/XF86Config file.

640x480

It may just be because the LiveCD is sticking with safe defaults and using a generic configuration that will probably work on every system.

its because your on a dell... many live cds fight with the onboard graphics.... it appears that they cant figure out what the card is capable of so it defaults to that... be that as it is a live cd... you would have to actually do some modding to the cd's contents... a task i found to be not worth it

NO.. LIVECDS CAN HAVE THIS PROBLEM... ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE ONBOARD VIDEO.. THE PROBLEM OCCURS IF LINUX CAN'T IDENTIFY ANY MEMORY ON YOUR RAM... ASSUMING HE MEANS HES STUCK AT 640X480 AS MY DADS EMACHINE WAS USING THE UBUNTU LIVECD... SUSE LIVECD HAD NO PROBLEM THOUGH
