Okay, so my compy got its last serious windows virus and i had this disk laying around so i loaded ubuntu 5.10. Now the trouble is that my wireless USB doesnt support linux so i moved the router and got a wired connection yeay!
__________________After enabling the onboard LAN in the bios, and activating the ethernet connection in ubuntu I clicked on the firefox thing and my connection wastimed out. I typed in the IP of my router and got that fine so i know I was connected to it, I did the whole terminal thing with the command sudo pppoeconf and that, and that didnt work. So I rebooted my comp, and had to reactivate the ethernet connection for some reason and still got a timed out connection. Randomly I tried www.ubuntu.com and that poped up while I was looking at something else (idk if thats cause it was connected for a short time or what) But I keep getting timed out now and idk why? I really dont wanna go back to XP someone help me please? ( I randomly clicked links on ubuntu.com and they worked, however firefox.com nad overclock.net were timed out) and stranger yet linux.org worked somewhat GAH does this thing just work when it wants too? I walked away for a while then went to pcpitstop.com loaded quickly did bandwidth test ran fine got 268 kb/sec I have DSL It allows me on these websites but not others is there some setting i missed or something perhaps?

Hmm.. You know, it IS possible they had a bug in 5.10- Download 6.06 and use that-(6.06 is a faster and nicer OS in any case.)

Try the 10/100- I have not found a PCI 10/100 that wasn't detected and completely useable in ubuntu...

Well I try to set up a PPPoE connect for one of my computer that I wanted to leave at home and not bring back to college with me. Only thing it does it fold. I recompiled the Kernel, had to add in the PPPoE support and then tried to follow some guides. I could not get it to connect though. I don't know much about networking, though; so I think that helped lead to my downfall. You could try recompiling the Kernel(just follow a guide online if you've never done it before). I'll find that you'll have to do that since most generic kernel that come with Ubuntu and that come with just that the generic things to make it compatible with a wide variety of machines, however; PPPoE is not a popular connection type. So the support need to be added. Best of luck with it, sorry I cannot be of more help. I hope you have better luck with it than I did.
