What exactly is the diferance between linux distros? I know that all versions are pretty much the same, but there are some diferances, as people will recomend one version over another. So, what are the diferances, and how much to the effect things?

Power. If i had to sum it up in one word power would be that word. In my experience some distro's are just more configurable than others, and require a higher knowledge of linux command line and useage.. Like Gentoo. I would say SuSE 10.1 and Fedora core 5(i think that is the newest) offer about the same amount of configuration and support features, and i think are the all around best for basic power users. Debain and ubunto are pretty close, and a little more user friendly i have heard. SuSE has alot of support + users, so finding things for it are pretty simple, and is owned by novell. Red Hat owns Fedora and also has a large amount of support and users. Gentoo i wouldnt say is very noob friendly, its probly the best distro of advanced-expert users. So i think the biggest diffrence between all of them, is the level of :support, users, and power over the os. Unlike windows, with enough knowledge you can manipulate linux to your exact liking.
EDIT: Also, the ease of installing and auto detection differs between distro's. And the amount of free source app's that come with the distro.

I agree with what Blue_Fire wrote. It really comes down to support in the end. The Ubuntu community is HUGE and very active; Suse and FC also have a very active community. This is important specially for newer users since you will be 98% certain to find a solution for your problem. Still, since most distros are Linux, what works in one often works in another (taking into consideration the differences between distros).

Yeah Ubuntu's community is very big. Same with Gentoo, you can find tons of guides and howtos for both of them.
