I have FreeBSD installed, and I am using KDE for the desktop now. My mouse finally works, now I am left with a final major problem - my graphics are stuck in vga 640 x 480. I am never going to buy ATI crap untill they make good, open source ... or at least some good drivers for Linux, and now in my case BSD. I have an AGP X800PRO
__________________I did xorgconfig and input my monitor Fh and Fv sync rates, and chose ATI Radean for the chipset, but once I start X all I get is 640x480, and there are no other options to change it to. It says the frequency is -19433 or some other weird number. xorg.conf has 1280x1024 through 640x480... which means it must not think it can work on any other resolution besides 640x480, or else it would have chosen the left most one that did work, right? All I can find for FreeBSD drivers is a port of the linux driver that is over a year old, back in the 8.20 binary driver days. And I can't seem to get that to work.. though I may have not done the linux_binary support right during installation. So do you know of a good FreeBSD driver for ATI? Oh, and the VESA one, and regular ATI one, chosen form the xorgconfig configuration doesn't work at all. Thanks for your help. Also, all I want is 1280x1024, not fancy 3D blah blah XGL/AIXGL/Compix~Beryl what-not, that I cant stand. I just need something to let me do 1280x1024 @75Hz, my vx922's native resolution. Thanks again.

Sweet, I got it working. Take a look. I need to theme it more, but it is pretty nice looking, and runs fast. Now I need to learn FreeBSD.

Dang I'm too late.
Anyway nice background. Use to be my old avatar. Is that the default theme for 6.2? I haven't upgraded to 6.2 yet still on 6.1-Release and 7.0-Current. If you want it to boot into a graohical login then edit ttys: Code:
ee /etc/ttys ttyv9 "/usr/local/bin/kdm -nodaemon" xterm on secure Edit: Brought back old avatar ![]()

When I installed KDE it didn't come themed, though I didn't do it through the installation but through pkg_add. There is still a lot for me to learn, just coasting through on my Linux knowledge until I have some time to read more of the handbook.

Thanks for the tip on how to boot the graphical login. I'll definitely use that. I need to get my sound working now. Hopefully it wont be too hard. Thanks.

Wait what did you do to make it work? I am interested in using FreeBSD but I thought there was no driver support from ATI to get anything working?

If you are going for the ATI binaries, there is only one I could find. It is by a guy who made it work... it is from December 2005, so it is kind of old, but still fglrx or whatever. The VESA is working good for me though. If you install it I'll try my best to answer any questions, but I am pretty sure the VESA should work pretty well for you. dangerousHobo knows a lot more about FreeBSD than I do, he could help you too.

I know nothing about ATI drivers as I've always used Nvidia. But if rippons having good results this the VESA driver than, then I'd give it a try to. If you were to still have problems with it or anything a good site to go to is the freebsdforums
And yeah FreeBSD is fast and I think it folds slightly faster than Linux. Just download the linux version and when you run it add the flag at the end ./FAH..... exe -freeBSD

I think "Xorg -configure" tries to configure xorg on its own and "xorgcfg -textmode" goes through the steps with you and gives you some options. Its been awhile since I've ran either and I'm in Slackware right now (down loading 6.2, might install it tomorrow)
