Default Want to play with Linux a little bit.

Howdie! First things first: I've never used anything but windows. I want to toy around with linux. I want it to be semi easy and fun and look cool (I want XGL saw some stuff on youtube ) and play games. Mainly CSS and possibly BF2142 (if I ever get back into it). I've read some info and this and that I have an 80 gig hdd in my sys. right now waiting for a taste of some Linux! Ubuntu sounds like its a good one to start with. Any suggestions? Please help meh out! I'm off to search linux.com

Ubuntu is a very good flavor of Linux to start with. It is very user friendly. I had it at one point, but I switched to Debian. My next adventure is going to be Gentoo.

ubuntu and kubuntu are the most user friendly imo but you are gonna have a real problem playing most games on linux.

I plan using linux for some experience, and something new. Not for mostly gaming. Should I go for the 64bit Ubuntu? Oh and can I use the "XGL" thingy on this?

I had problems with the 64bit Ubuntu (not as many things were supported, lack of support for programs and drivers and such). That was a while ago (about 1.5 years), so it could be better now.

And you can use XGL in Ubuntu, but it is not enabled by default. (You need to download the package from an unofficial repository. It isn't as complicated as it sounds.)

You're not going to be able to play CSS or BF2142 on Linux.....

From my understanding (warning: inexperience), you can run Counterstrike on Linux using WINE. I found a howto here.

But I just use Windows for my games.
