Well, I downloaded Ubuntu Feisty about a week ago to mess around with, as I've never used any form of Linux before. Well, intitially I was very impressed with the OS, but began to run into some problems to say the least. First off, Ubuntu hates my configuration. I've come to this conclusion after hours upon countless hours of researching/troubleshooting. I've found various articles about nForce3 incompatibility, and even more so with the ASUS K8N*** series boards, which I have. Next on to the x1600 512MB, apparently it doesn't like that either. I have tried about 10-15 different how-to's on installing the fglrx drivers for Feisty, but NONE of them worked. I have managed to get higher resolutions, but still no 3D accel. Still seeing the Mesa/Vesa? drivers from fglrx info. So much for ditching Windows...until I set up something with an nVidia vid card anyhow.

Try Fedora. Ive tried Ubuntu on 2 separate occasions, very far apart, and i ran into problems both times with my computer. Fedora has always installed and ran great for me.

ATI drivers on Ubuntu aren't all that hard if you use the repos. There's also tons of software out there that users have created that will install the latests drivers for you, usually with no problems. As for your motherboard, I'm not sure really.
Generally I was told Nvidia GPUs were the best hands down, and I have an Nvidia card in my current rig, but all my other computers (the other 4 in the house) have run some version of Ubuntu just fine with the exception of my first computer that was running an ATI 9200SE. Could NOT get the drivers working with this card, just couldn't. . . but that was also the first time I tried Linux ![]() |

well, I have finally "sort of" got the ATI drivers working in Feisty. Except it is only recognizing 64MB instead of 512MB and performance is terrible.

I'll post my xorg.conf, but I'm in XP right now, so I can't. Anyway, still working at the ATI drivers. I managed to get the "fglrxinfo" to display info about my card instead of mesa/vesa crap, is what I meant by I sort of got my ATI drivers to work. Desktop performance is great, and you can tell the drivers did something for sure, my only problem now is it is recognizing my card as a 64MB x1600, therefore only utilizing 64MB of my 512MB GDDR2. I don't know, at least I have setup Beryl desktop in a seperate Ubuntu session so I have some Ubuntu to enjoy, I was really hoping to get a few emulators going good on the ATI drivers, no such luck, not yet anyways. And piratebay is a killer torrent site I must say!
