Ok...
I have Fedora 6. I've installed the OS on 3 rigs with no problems. But now the 4th rig has run into a snag. The last instructions before re-boot were: Fedora 6 installed successfully. Asks to have install disks removed and then reboot. Then I get GRUB> and nothing more. What am I suppose to do?? I know that GRUB is a bootloader, but this time it is not loading anything. I also know it's waiting for instructions of some kind. Where do I look or how do I look to make sure the hard drive had the OS installed? I think the "ls" commands is for looking up directories, right? But at the GRUB> what do I write? What do I need to type at the GRUB> to get things going and loading properly?? Please be specific AND show it step by step in your reply. I'm not a Linux follower and need major help and/or training... I do not know the Linux commands either... Any help would be greatly appreciated, :-)

try <tab>
if it list possible commands then its a true grub shell if it is then try configfile (hd0,0)/boot/grub/menu.lst note: grub will auto complete with <tab>

Well I have tried <tab> and it did give me some commands. However, it did not auto complete as you state. I will try the configfile (hd0,0/boot/grub/menu.lst If this does not work, does that mean the operating system did not get loaded unto the hard drive, even though it says it did?? How can I check to see if there is something on the hard drive from the GRUB> ?? What do I type in?? This Linux stuff is not as easy as DOS was... Or maybe it's just me. Thanks in advance, :-)

it sounds like you have a broken menu.lst file
the grub command prompt is not good for vewing whats on your comp but the fact it loades means more than likely its some simple little thing

How would I find that simple little thing?? I figure as much. But not being a Linux user per se, trying to troubleshoot it is very difficult. Back in the day, when you had troubles with DOS or loading Windows 95 is was easier to find commands and look for the problem. Today, it's a no can do with XP and Linux is still way to new for me.... If you or someone with good Linux experience were to look at my computer, I have no doubt that I would be folding with it within an hour. For me it's taken 4 days and counting... How would a person fix or locate a broken menu.lst?? Thanks again, :-)

one of the fastest ways of troubleshoooting linux is to use a live cd
try slax once the live cd is running open a console and enter: Quote:

Ok then,
None of the above help or directions has done anything. All I get is: Error 21 selected disk does not exist or Error 27 unrecognized command Great! I'm beginning to think Linux sucks worse than MS Windows!! Thanks for the help.... The computer is going out the ******ing Window!

Grub is not part of Linux. It is just a program that is added along with the distributions, b/c it is widely known that linux users have other OSs installed on the same machine; so Grub is included for convenience.
So don't go thinking Linux < Windows all because of Grub. ![]() As for the issue though, I'm not sure as I don't know much of the advance stuff with Grub. If you haven't tries already, you may want to try posting a linuxforums.org.

I realize that Grub is the boot loader program for the Fedora 6 OS. It's there as part of their program to install and operate. I don't know why this last install of Fedora 6 went so badly. I also received the same results after loading the program onto a second hard drive. So now I have 2 hard drives that load to Grub> and wait for instructions.... Hitting the tab key only gives me a list of possible options to try... If I knew what exactly to type in, I think I would be set. Unfortunately none of the suggestions given to me here or at the Fedora 6 forums have helped. It may be a unique problem to the motherboard/cpu/ram combination... In this particular case, only Fedora 6 has been loaded unto the hard drive. It's the third attempt for me. I have 1 - Conroe, and 2 - X2's running the Fedora 6 OS. I also know that Compaddict had the same problems, so he went to Windows XP. Either way, I'm going to re-format the hard drive and try installing Windows XP and fold SMP with that... Wish me luck. Thanks for the suggestion and comments though, :-)
