Is there any benefit towards this? If so, I am going to do it now

Not really, you get the same end result unless you're on a system like Gentoo where you can optimize programs for your specific hardware. The only "real" benefit is that once you learn to compile one program, you can download the source of pretty much any program on any distro and know how to work with it.

Building a program from source is definatly something a linux user should know how to do, even if you prefer package management tools for their dependency-solving abilities.

Sounds good, I will learn it soon. First I am installing alot of codecs, tools, and also, what do I need to use along with wine? I mean like what should I do after installing it? I have heard of fonts, ie4? and other dll's or what-not but I can't find anything specific nor helpful..

Aside from the points Chipp made, sometimes your distro's package manager will not have the most recent build for some reason or another (it's not considered as stable as a previous version, repos haven't been updated, etc.). Also, building stuff from source makes you cool .

Fonts are a good thing to make sure you have. I just mounted my Windows drive and copied the Fonts folder into Wine. Some things (like Steam) won't show text without doing that.
